Tell our readers a bit about yourself?
I am a London based fashion/portrait photographer and apparently a household name in the Blogosphere. I don’t think so but it is what I am told by people, haha! I started off photographing London Fashion Week fresh out of university and grew from there really! I now photograph a lot of bloggers/influencers.
How did you first get into photography?
I took it up as an A level and then got hooked into it. I was always an arty person and normally liked to draw or paint but as soon as I picked up a camera in A level, I knew that this was it for me.
When did you first start your blog?
Nearly 3 years ago now.
What do you enjoy about photography?
Capturing a moment and also a personality. I love meeting new people and when I don’t have a camera with me I am actually really shy, believe it or not. Photographing people helps me get over that shyness and speak to new people.
For anyone that wants to start or get better at photography, what advice would you give them?
I tweet out regular portrait tips! #KayesPortraitTips. You can follow it on instagram and twitter and hopefully learn some stuff that way. I am also open to answering any questions people have. @fordtography on both platforms.
What camera do you use?
Canon EOS 6D
Nowadays a picture doesn’t go online without a filter on top, what apps would you recommend for easy editing?
I only ever use lightroom when it comes to my DSLR photos. But any phone snap I take I run it through VSCO and Afterlight.
What do you enjoy photographing the most?
People. I can photograph products etc but it isn’t exciting to me like photographing a person is.
How do make sure the final photo is like the original vision you had in your head?
I don’t ever go into anything visualising a final photo. I have rough ideas of what I want to capture but that is it. When it comes to people I want a good full body shot, a good head shot, and a good waist crop.
Would you ever think about teaching photography?
I have thought about it and I guess I already try to with #KayesPortraitTips. I just currently don’t have the time to try and organise a workshop or a classroom style teaching event. People do seem interested though! So, for now I will have to stick to my hashtag until I get some time.
How do you put your own little twist on your pictures?
Through my editing. People can tell when a photo has been taken by me apparently. I have my own preset *top secret* that I use and have made up and apply to my images to correct for colour imbalance and exposure and a few other bits.
DSLR or Polaroid?
I still love a good Polaroid!
Colour or black and white?
B&W. To me they sometimes seem calmer and less busy. I like calm in a day and age that is full of visual noise.
Why do you think it’s important to take photographs?
For memories. To look back on. To celebrate. To enjoy and live and love.
